Fellowship Program

For over 20 years, Dr. Maas has been a fellowship director for The Fellowship Program under the auspices of the Educational and Research Foundation for the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

The fellowship program provides postgraduate training in facial plastic surgery for exceptional young surgeons who have finished four years of medical school, an internship in general surgery and a residency in otolaryngology or plastic surgery. Each fellow spends one year in the program observing and assisting Dr. Maas.

“It is an exciting time to be a facial plastic surgeon. Facial cosmetic procedures are more popular than ever, and the next generation of facial plastic surgeons must be prepared to meet that demand. The rigorous training of a fellowship gives them the hands-on experience needed to succeed.” — Dr. Maas

Objectives of the Fellowship Program

The AAFPRS Educational and Research Foundation Fellowship is internationally recognized as the top postgraduate program for facial plastic surgeons. Since 1969, the program has helped hundreds of surgeons become leaders in their field. The objectives of the fellowship program are to:

  • Provide an outstanding academic opportunity for the acquisition of specialized knowledge and skills in facial plastic surgery
  • Develop trained specialists who will contribute to the ongoing development of facial plastic and reconstructive surgery
  • Foster development of facial plastic and reconstructive surgery educators, especially in residency programs
  • Encourage the development of new skills and knowledge in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery through basic research and clinical trials

Fellowship directors are recognized authorities in the teaching and practice of facial plastic surgery.

“Before the days of internships and residency programs, the way doctors learned was through one-on-one mentorship. It’s the best way to truly become an expert in something. I hope all my fellows become fellowship directors one day and continue this wonderful tradition.” — Dr. Maas

The Fellowship Experience

Dr. Maas’ fellows receive education and training in a variety of critical areas during their one-year program, including:

  • Cosmetic surgery for the aging face
  • Surgical treatment of traumatic and congenital deformities
  • Rhinoplasty and revision rhinoplasty
  • Hair restoration surgery
  • Cosmetic injections and minimally-invasive aesthetic procedures
  • Planning, treating and execution of clinical research

The fellow is an active participant in the practice and is given both the honor and responsibilities of being a caretaker and investigator for The Maas Clinic’s patients and research subjects. During the program, they assist Dr. Maas in surgery and contribute to the pre- and post-operative care of patients. They also assist in the clinical research projects conducted at The Maas Clinic.

“I’m very proud and excited to be a mentor for a fellow each year. They are top-notch people and fantastic doctors who bring a lot of inquisitiveness, ideas and energy to The Maas Clinic. Our patients love them and it is an honor for me to help them advance their understanding of our specialty.” — Dr. Maas
